Why Use Fixed Optical Attenuator for FTTH PON & Fiber Test?

The Core Problem: Optical Receiver Over-Saturation

Many fiber links fail not because of too little signal, but too strong optical power. When input power exceeds receiver threshold, saturation occurs: high bit error rate, unstable connection or permanent damage to expensive optical modules. Optical fixed attenuator solves this problem by adding precise, stable loss in the link.

Application

  • FTTH & PON Network

In PON FTTH, OLT transmit power is relatively high. When ONU is very close to OLT, excess optical power needs attenuation.

Plug type optical attenuator such as SC APC fixed attenuator is installed between patch cord and ONU for permanent power balance. It is a low-cost passive solution compared with active power adjustment.

  • Fiber Optic Test & Instrument Calibration

Telecom fiber test attenuator is widely used in labs and field test.

Engineers use single mode fiber attenuator 5dB 10dB 20dB to simulate fiber loss budget, verify link margin and calibrate optical power meters.

Fixed attenuator has better repeatability than variable attenuator for standard test setups.

  • Data Center & Telecom Transmission Links

In data center fiber links and long-haul telecom networks, fixed attenuators balance channel power before optical amplifiers.

Low supplementary loss and excellent temperature stability are required.

Our OAT-HF attenuator features return loss ≥50dB and working temperature -40℃ ~ +85℃.

Why Choose Fixed Attenuator Over Other Solutions

  • Passive: No power supply required, zero maintenance
  • Plug & Play: SC/LC/FC standard connector, fast deployment
  • Stable: Attenuation value does not drift after installation
  • Economical: Ideal for large FTTH and telecom rollout from fiber optic attenuator supplier China

Frequently Asked Field Question

Q: How much dB attenuator should I add for PON ONU protection?

A: Calculate power budget first. Common values: 3dB,5dB,7dB,10dB single mode fixed attenuator. We accept custom dB values for bulk orders.
